In the trip chat we spent two days fighting between Bacalar and Tulum. Everyone has an opinion, no one agrees, and in the end it was me who investigated the actual logistics so that we could decide based on data and not just Instagram photos.
Bacalar: if you are looking for tranquility
Bacalar is the lagoon of the seven colors and the pace is noticeably slower than that of the Riviera. If your group wants to disconnect, go kayaking or simply do nothing by the water, this is the obvious answer. From Cancun, the ADO Bus Center connects with the Bacalar Bus Terminal, with two operators covering the route: ADO GL and AU.
Tulum: if you're looking for more action
Tulum has beaches, an archaeological zone, and nightlife — it’s the destination for those who want variety on the same trip, not just relaxation. The route from Cancun also leaves from the ADO Bus Center, directly to the ADO Tulum Bus Terminal, covered by ADO.
The real logistics, not the ones we invented in the chat
Neither route is complicated — they both start from the same point in Cancun, which in practice simplifies the decision: it’s not a question of how easy it is to get there, but of what kind of trip you want. Instead of listing schedules that change depending on the day, we compare the options live on BUZ on the same day we decide to buy — that way we see the actual price and departure time, not one that someone posted on a blog a year ago.
The answer that no one wanted to hear
You can do both. If the trip is several days long, Bacalar and Tulum are not mutually exclusive — you just have to plan the order. We ended up going first to one and then to the other, and it was, without exaggeration, the best decision of the group.
And to sleep
Whatever your route is, if you're looking for something practical and well located so you don't have to spend your travel budget on the hotel, take a look at Hotels City Express by Marriott — is one of the most consistent options when you change your destination every day or two.
Compare tickets to Bacalar and a Tulum in BUZ before the group changes its mind again.
